Online dating has changed the way people meet and communicate — and as that old saying goes, when you’re trying to find bae, communication is key. With new ways to flirt, date and find love come new lingo to describe the adventures — or misadventures — of online dating. As part of Morning Edition ‘s series, What Makes Us Click, here are some words and terms in the online dating lexicon. To call someone “bae” is to refer to them as your significant other.

Some people aren’t going to let the coronavirus sideline their dating life. So they’ve gotten more creative when it comes to that crucial first date. If you’re following the guidelines for social distancing, how are you supposed to go on a date? Some users of online dating apps like Tinder and Bumble and Hinge are making that work.

The series, What Makes Us Click , explored how dating has evolved as apps and websites have grown more popular. At the time, McClain was frustrated with online dating, so she turned to a modern matchmaker.

McClain’s date with Biely, director of e-commerce at Goodwill Southern California, was her first and only! The couple went on a dinner date in LA, and producers from Morning Edition and a photographer tagged along. The couple were nervous as the date started, though they eventually relaxed, talking so long that they closed down the restaurant — but not before splitting an ice cream sundae.

A few months ago, on their first-date anniversary, the pair celebrated by going to that same restaurant. This time when they ordered dessert, Biely proposed. They wed in Las Vegas in early April. When McClain emailed Morning Edition in January to share the news of their engagement, we wanted to know more about how they had gone from strangers to serious under what hardly screamed auspicious circumstances — a blind date that was recorded and photographed and later shared with millions of people.

Now, in her mids and on the verge of incomparable success for a woman of color in Silicon Valley, she can’t afford to be distracted by a hunky Samoan former football player.

So what’s the best way to start or keep a relationship going while trying to stay healthy – to even try to date at a time like this? To talk about this, we reached out to two people we like to check in with to talk about such matters.

The cyber-dating industry is stretching far beyond its mass-market beginnings, with niche dating sites for every lifestyle or preference.

When other users saw Stone’s profile, they reported it, thinking it was an imposter. The star of Basic Instinct tweeted at Bumble, pleading: “Don’t shut me out of the hive. Good morning. I’m Noel King. You ever thought online dating is terrible? Yes, absolutely. Turns out, it’s hard even for famous people. Actress Sharon Stone found that out after she joined the dating app Bumble. When other users saw her profile, they reported it, thinking, this cannot be the real Sharon Stone. The star of “Basic Instinct” tweeted at Bumble, pleading, don’t shut me out of the hive.

And they restored her account. Get back out there, Sharon.

Chicago dating coach Bela Gandhi said the disruption caused by COVID has made people seek out relationships and romantic encounters. Dating app data matches Gandhi’s observation.

According to Tinder, there were more than 3 billion swipes on March 29th, the highest number of recorded swipes for a single day in the app’s history. People have also been turning to non-dating-specific apps and games to meet and spend time with loved ones — some people reported that they’ve scheduled virtual dates and even attended wedding ceremonies in the Nintendo Switch game Animal Crossing.
